Giorgia Meloni scripts history as the first woman PM of Italy

Giorgia Meloni is elected as the new prime minister of Italy, making her the first woman in the history of Italy to assume the position. Meloni’s party, the Brothers of Italy, emerged victorious in the election with an unassailable majority after forming a right-wing alliance with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and the far-right League party of former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. The new regime is the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini.

Meloni ventured into politics in 2006 and co-founded the Brothers of Italy in 2012. She rose to prominence in the party, whose principles are deeply rooted in Euroskepticism and anti-immigration policies.

The party’s accession to the power ameliorates its dismal performance in the 2018 polls. In the last election, the party only managed to secure 4.5% of the votes. However, in the course of four years, Italy has surprisingly taken a turn to the extreme right, enabling the Brothers of Italy to lead the nation.

The elevation of Giorgia Meloni to the position of prime minister has raised concerns among the LGBT community due to her openly anti -LGBT policies. She also advocates against abortion, triggering the apprehension that she might impose new laws to restrict the freedom of abortion. However, it remains to be seen what her new agenda will be once she officially becomes the prime minister. But we will have to wait for it as it may take weeks to form the new government.
