Droupadi Murmu makes history as India’s first tribal president

Droupadi Murmu scripted history by becoming India’s first tribal and the second women president. Born on June 20 1958, she is also the youngest person to assume the position of president of India. She contested the presidential election as the NDA candidate and emerged victorious over the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. She will take oath as the 15th President of India on July 25, succeeding the outgoing president Ram Nath Kovind. 

The election witnessed a plethora of cross-voting, stunning the opposition. As per reliable government sources, 17 MPs and 104 MLAs cross-voted for Mrs Droupadi Murmu, enabling her to maintain lead in all four rounds of counting. She crossed the halfway mark in the third round, ensuring victory even before the fourth round of counting began.

After the four rounds, she extended her lead by a considerable margin as she received 2,824 votes of 6,76,803 value, whereas her opponent Yashwant Sinha secured 1,877 votes of 3,80,177 value. She claimed 64.03% of the total valid votes due to the massive cross-voting.

The President-elect from Odisha belongs to the Santhal tribe. She started her career as a government employee before entering politics. She was a junior assistant in the State Irrigation and Power Department. She also served as a teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre. However, she quit her job to be a full-time politician. She joined the BJP in 1997 and became a councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.

She rose to power after being elected as the minister of state for Commerce and Transportation with an independent charge in 2000. In 2002, she became the minister for the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development. 

She cemented her legacy as the first woman governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015. She had faced personal tragedies in her life after losing her husband and two children unexpectedly. Despite her personal tragedies, she became an inspiration to women as she proved herself to be the epitome of resilience.
