Uniform Maternity Leave Benefits for Women in the Armed Forces

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave green light to the proposal to extend Maternity, Child Care, and Child Adoption Leaves for women soldiers, sailors, and air warriors in the Armed Forces, making their benefits consistent with those given to their officer counterparts. These rules ensure that all women in the military, regardless of their ranks, will receive the same leave benefits.

According to the Defence Ministry, the decision is in accordance with Singh’s vision of promoting female participation in the armed forces, regardless of their rank. This initiative will improve the work environment for women in the military, helping them enhance their work-life balance.

Currently, female officers are entitled to 180 days of fully paid maternity leave per child, capped at a maximum of two children. Women officers are allotted a total of 360 days for child care leave throughout their service, given the child is under 18 years old, with special considerations for children with at least 40 percent disability. Furthermore, a child adoption leave of 180 days is provided after a valid adoption of a child below one year of age.
