The Taliban orders to stop issuing driving license to women

The Taliban are notorious for restricting the freedom and rights of women. They took over Afghanistan in August last year. The Taliban government has promised to be liberal in the treatment of women and has assured that it will preserve women’s rights.

However, the Taliban seem to be reneging on its promises. After seizing power,  they have been restricting the rights of Afghan women. The latest order from the Taliban officials in Herat has dictated driving instructors to stop issuing new licenses to women.

Herat is widely considered liberal compared to the other parts of the country. Women are allowed to drive vehicles in this large city. However, the Taliban government is restricting women’s right to drive vehicles. Agha Achakzai, the head of Herat’s Traffic Management Institute, which oversees the driving schools, confirmed that the institute had received a verbal order not to issue new licenses to women. He added that the officials had not asked them to stop women from driving.

The new order has caused an uproar among women. They are openly voicing their objection to the restrictions on driving the vehicles. Many women opinionated that they would like to learn to drive, as they feel safe while driving their own vehicles.

They also pointed out that they would not have to depend on any male family members in case of a medical emergency if they could learn to drive.

The Taliban had earlier denied permission for the girls to return to secondary schools. They had also removed women from various government jobs.

The move is a veiled attempt to curb the freedom of women so that they will not question the patriarchal domination in the country.
