Serving passion! This Kerala woman quits her job to run a tea shop

Serena, an MSc graduate, met opposition from her family when she decided to open a tea shop in Kochi with her husband, Liju. Liju lost his job as an underwater scuba diver in the Gulf following the outbreak of COVID. This impacted their decision to run a tea shop. It was an unconventional decision, as she had to quit her job at a multinational company to run a tea shop.

Overcoming their initial hurdles, they opened a tea shop named ‘Dining Island’ on Willingdon Island in Kerala. Their shop offers a diverse range of 50 teas, including cinnamon tea, hibiscus tea, pepper tea, English breakfast tea, Al kabous and chamomile tea, along with cold beverages and snacks. Serena cooks and serves hot and fresh snacks while Liju prepares tea for the customers.

Managing a shop was not smooth sailing for them. They were compelled to close the shop due to legal complications. Even though they succeeded in reopening the shop, they could not attract many customers. However, they were gradually able to build a strong clientele.

The couple is earning enough money by doing what they love. They have an assistant to help with cold drinks. Serena enjoys running the tea shop and urges others to pursue their passions.
