Saudi Arabia all set to launch its first woman astronaut to space

Saudi Arabia is all set to launch its first woman astronaut into space as a part of the newly announced astronaut program. Houston-based company Axiom Space masterminds the mission.

If all goes as planned, the mission will take place in the first half of 2023. It is important to note that the decision was made four years after Saudi women were permitted to drive vehicles.

The mission is an integral component of Saudi’s zealous Vision 2030. A female astronaut will join the male counterparts, making it the first time Saudi Arabia has sent a woman to space. Confirming the development, Axiom Space President and CEO Michael Suffredini explained, “Space belongs to all of humanity, which is one of the reasons Axiom Space is pleased to welcome our new partnership with the Saudi Space Commission to train and fly Saudi astronauts, including the first female Saudi astronaut.”

However, this is not the first time Saudi is launching a human being into space. Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud participated in the STS-51-G mission of the space shuttle Discovery in 1985.

As for Axiom, the company has already taken to the air one private crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Axion is prepping for the next ISS mission, which is due next Spring.
