Kerala Women Take the Lead in Pursuit of Freedom on Wheels

In Kerala, there is a higher number of young women who wish to learn to drive in comparison to girls in other states. According to the data, women accounted for 40% of the nearly 11 lakh people who obtained learner’s licences in Kerala. Goa ranked second, with women comprising 33% of the individuals who obtained learner’s licences.

According to experts in women’s studies, the primary factors contributing to the growing number of women acquiring driving licences in Kerala are education and financial independence. The presence of a considerable number of educated and employed women plays a significant role in motivating individuals to learn to drive in Kerala.

Motor vehicle department officers have observed that a significant number of middle-aged women are displaying an interest in learning to drive. This interest stems from the need to accomplish their errands and tasks independently.

Women particularly favour two-wheelers due to their affordability and the convenience they provide for both homemakers and working women in completing their tasks promptly.

Although there is a noticeable interest among women in obtaining learner’s licences, many tend to discontinue the process before acquiring a driver’s licence. Instead, they prefer to rely on two-wheelers, particularly in less congested or local areas, while refraining from driving four-wheelers.

Learning to drive a vehicle provides a sense of independence and comfort for women. By acquiring driving skills, women can have greater control over their transportation and mobility. It allows them to travel conveniently, run errands, and participate in various activities without relying on others.
