How This Fingerprint Expert Paved the Way for Women in Forensic Science

There has been a substantial increase in the representation of women in forensic science, including fingerprint examination, in recent decades. However, this was not always the case, as historical barriers limited women’s participation in such fields.

Ms Sailaja KR, the first fingerprint expert in Kerala and the former Deputy Director of the Kerala State Fingerprint Bureau, offers valuable insights into her experiences after retiring from her distinguished service.

She holds the distinction of being the first woman to attain the position of Deputy Director at the Kerala State Fingerprint Bureau. Reflecting on her time in service, she fondly recalls an environment where she never experienced differential treatment based on gender.

Sailaja embarked on her career as a fingerprint searcher in 1997. She served in various fingerprint bureaus across different districts in Kerala, including Kottayam, Idukki, Wayanad, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Throughout her career, she played a vital role in solving numerous mysterious crime investigations. Among her most remarkable achievements was her significant contribution to unravelling the murder case of an Odisha couple in Kottayam. Her meticulous fingerprint analysis was pivotal in identifying the murderer in the case. The court, considering this compelling evidence, handed down the death penalty.

Throughout Sailaja’s 25-year tenure, she observed remarkable progress in forensic science. The field has embraced digitisation, allowing access to online tools and centralised fingerprint databases.

Previously, fingerprint records were stored at the district level, but now the entire state’s records are housed on a single server. Additionally, it is now possible to compare these records with fingerprints from other states when necessary.

Sailaja’s accomplishments have opened doors for more women to pursue fingerprint expertise in Kerala and beyond. Her successful career is a testament to the fact that gender should never hinder one from pursuing their passion or excelling in their chosen profession.
