Examining Gender Disparities in Organ Transplants Within India’s Landscape

There are four organ transplants performed on men for every one carried out on a woman in India. Dr. Anil Kumar, the Director of NOTTO, mentioned that although more men serve as cadaver donors, a higher number of women contribute as living donors.

Between 1995 and 2021, a total of 36,640 transplants were conducted. Out of this number, more than 29,000 were performed on men, while 6,945 were carried out on women.

The analysis of organ transplants in 2019 revealed that 80% of living organ donors were primarily women, mainly mothers or wives. Ninety-three percent of all organ donations in the nation were from living donors.

The rise in female donors can be attributed to economic and financial obligations, societal pressures, and long-standing preferences.
