Ensuring Safe Journeys: The Pink Squad Now Patrols the Metro!

The first batch of the Pink Squad was officially inducted into the Chennai Metro security team on Thursday. The squad comprises 23 women and aims to provide a secure commuting environment for women. The members of the Pink Squad possess not only proficiency in martial arts and self-defence techniques but also excellent customer service and communication skills.

They will function as a swift-response unit, enhancing security measures alongside the extensive CCTV surveillance of trains and stations. Moreover, the trains feature a passenger safety intercom system for immediate assistance if required. CMRL has also established a helpline (1860-425-1515) for commuters to contact in case of emergencies.

During the initial stage, they will be stationed at busy metro stations, including Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro, Arignar Anna Alandur Metro, and Airport Metro. Additionally, they will also travel with female passengers in metro stations during peak hours.

The squad is the result of a women’s safety survey conducted in June last year. The survey had 12,000 female commuters participating, and their inputs have been considered while implementing this initiative.
