Himachal Pradesh Takes the Lead with Highest Female Workforce Participation

Himachal Pradesh boasts the highest representation of women in the Indian workforce between 2021 and 2023, as females from the state comprise 49% of the labour force participation in the 15-59 age group. It surpasses the national average, which stands at 32%. Meghalaya held the second-highest proportion at 45%, trailed by Sikkim and Nagaland, both registering a workforce participation ratio of 44%.

These statistics are based on the State Bank of India’s most recent Ecowrap report, which compared data from the annual Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted between 2021 and 2023.

In two years, the labour force participation rate (LFPR) for females aged 15 to 29 in Himachal rose by 10.9%, ranking second highest nationally, just behind Odisha, which experienced an 11.3% increase.

Haryana and Punjab have comparatively lower female workforce participation, with women comprising only 21% and 26% of the labour force, respectively. Punjab experienced a growth of 7.5%. Haryana saw a change of only 1.2%, which is the third lowest in the country, on par with Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu and Assam are the only states where female labour force participation has decreased.
