Why Is Extreme Heat Exposure Bad News for Pregnant Women?

According to new research in the Journal of the American Medical Association, pregnant women who experience extreme heat are at greater risk of life-threatening complications. Both short and long-term exposure to environmental heat during pregnancy increases severe maternal morbidity. High heat exposure throughout pregnancy or the third trimester elevates risks by 27%. Heat waves in the last gestational week also raise the risk of life-threatening delivery issues.
