Revolutionary! A New Online Platform to Address Violence Against Women

The World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Women, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have joined forces to launch the RESPECT Women website. This newly introduced online platform functions as a comprehensive hub, aiming to advance practical measures, policies, and initiatives that prevent and combat violence against females.

The website’s launch coincided with the Women Deliver Conference held in Kigali, Rwanda, with over 6,000 delegates in attendance. The primary focus of the conference was to promote gender equality and strengthen female well-being and autonomy in matters of sexual and reproductive health.

The issue of violence against women and girls is a matter of utmost importance for global public health, gender equality, and human rights. It is deeply concerning that nearly one-third of women around the world encounter physical and/or sexual violence, often perpetrated by their partners. This alarming statistic highlights the pervasive gender inequality and discrimination they continue to encounter.

The recently launched website plays a significant role in fulfilling the commitments of the Action Coalition on violence prevention. This user-friendly and interactive platform offers valuable practical assistance for the implementation of the RESPECT Women framework’s seven evidence-based strategies. It provides informative resources on how to execute successful programs effectively, as well as offers training materials and multimedia content for advocacy purposes.

Since its launch in 2019, the RESPECT framework has been implemented in 16 countries, showcasing notable progress through country-specific examples. However, according to a WHO report, data reveals that merely 40% of countries have incorporated at least one of the three crucial RESPECT strategies—female empowerment, providing relevant services, and transforming gender attitudes, beliefs, and norms—into their national policies.

The website provides a comprehensive and user-friendly platform for implementing well-defined strategies to prevent and tackle violence.
