Landmark Achievement: India Creates History with the First Women-Only Hajj Flight

An Indian Hajj flight created a historic moment as women operated it solely and exclusively carried female pilgrims. A flight by Air India Express from Kozhikode, Kerala, arrived in Jeddah with 145 pilgrims on board.

Capt. Kanika Mehra, First Officer Garima Passi, and four cabin crew members assumed control of the management of the women-only flight. The passengers belong to the group of 4,000 Indian female pilgrims who will independently perform Hajj in Makkah and Madinah this year.

Kerala accounts for the majority of women pilgrims from India undertaking the pilgrimage without a Mahram. Kerala stands out among Indian states with the highest overall percentage of female pilgrims. Reliable sources indicate that sixty per cent of the pilgrims from Kerala are women.

Under India’s quota of 175,000, around 11,000 individuals from Kerala will perform the Hajj this year. This new milestone reflects women’s growing empowerment and participation in religious journeys.
