A Massive Increase in the Literacy Rate of Indian Women

The literacy rate for women in India has witnessed a massive leap from 9% during the time of independence to 77% at present. The male literacy rate also rose to 84.7%.

According to the National Sample Survey by the government, Kerala dominates the table as the most literate state in India, with a rate of 92.2%. The union territory of Lakshadweep secured the second position with a literacy rate of 91.85%, with Mizoram reaching third with a rate of 91.33%.

Bihar has registered the lowest literacy rate in the country, standing at 61.8%. Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan also have abysmal literacy rates at 65.3% and 66.1%, respectively.

The current school dropout rate is 12.6%, with 19.8% of students quitting their studies at the secondary level. Unfortunately, early marriage and gender discrimination make girls more likely to withdraw from school.

Literacy rates in urban areas of India are much higher compared to rural areas. The literacy rate in urban areas was 84.11%, while the literacy rate in rural areas was 67.77%.
