Oscars: Michelle Yeoh becomes the first Asian winner of the best actress award

Michelle Yeoh was among the frontrunners to win the Academy Award for best actress, and there was no expected twist as she accepted the award for the same category. The Malaysian-born actress will go down in history as the first Asian woman to receive the prestigious award.

She earned the award for her incredible performance in the multiversal adventure ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’ Yeoh is only the second woman of colour to win the prize, following Halle Berry, who bagged the award a couple of decades ago.

She had some inspiring words to share in her acceptance speech. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility. This is proof that dreams dream big and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re past your prime, she said in her acceptance speech.”

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ secured seven awards, including best picture and editing. In the movie, Michelle Yeoh Yeoh plays a Chinese-American laundrette owner who uncovers different versions of herself in the multiverse.
