The Umbrella Scheme for Safety of Women Gets an Extension

The Indian Union Cabinet has given a green signal to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal to continue the Umbrella Scheme for Women’s Safety. The approved total budget for the scheme amounts to Rs. 1179.72 crore, encompassing the timeframe from 2021–22 to 2025–26.

 This amount will be split between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Nirbhaya Fund. The MHA will shoulder the larger share, contributing Rs. 885.49 crore. The Nirbhaya Fund will provide the remaining Rs. 294.23 crore. 

Within the larger framework of the Umbrella Scheme focused on the safety of women, the government will continue to boost these initiatives:

1. The upgrade of the 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 2.0.

2. Advancement of central forensic science laboratories, including the establishment of a National Forensic Data Centre.

3. Enhancement of DNA analysis and cyberforensic capabilities in state forensic science laboratories (FSLs).

4. Comprehensive strategies to prevent cyber crimes against women and children.

5. Strengthening the skills and abilities of investigators and prosecutors to handle cases of sexual assault against women and children through training and capacity-building initiatives.

6. Setting up women’s help desks and anti-human trafficking units.
